Fearing Lyme Disease I consulted a doctor. Since I was in Florida, I learned from the doctor that my chance of contracting Lyme Disease in Central Florida was small. So I will be fine after a few pills. But I wanted to share with all of my readers this Center for Disease Control map so you can see what geographical areas are most vulnerable. The map shows cases of Lyme Disease around the country in 2013.

Clearly the Northeast is at highest risk. Makes sense since Lyme Disease is supposedly named for Lyme, Connecticut.
So just be careful and seek medical attention for any seriously embedded tick. Go to an "urgent care" facility and let them remove it so they can identify it and best evaluate whether or not you need to be treated for Lyme Disease. Don't let it go. From all accounts, it's a debilitating illness once established.
Techniques and Advice for Safety and Survival, this interactive course
is appropriate for adults 16 and above. There is no time limit so students can
work on it at their leisure. In 20 simple and easy-to-follow lesson plans students
will learn how to plan for an outing, how to dress and what equipment to carry
and what to do if they encounter “critters” out there in the woods. Although
the planning and preparation for your outing should keep you out of trouble,
there are tips on what to do when things go wrong from injuries, to what to do
if you lose the trail. Upon signing up for the course you will receive a copy
of the book, Safe in the Woods (a $20 value itself), a lesson plan log and
directions on how to complete the course. All of that will be in hard copy as
well as on a CD with three hours of Powerpoint review topics and information.
Along the way I will personally be available to answer any questions you may
have about any aspect of the course by email or phone. If you choose to take
the Final Exam (optional) you can earn a Certificate of Completion which will
be issued and sent to you by mail.

On Saturday
evening, January 24, 2015 from 7:00 to 9:30 pm Author and Master Naturalist
Roger Fulton will present a seminar on How
to be Safe in the Woods. The seminar is based on his newest book of the
same name. In a series of Powerpoint presentations, he will cover the basics of
how to explore natural areas in Florida and elsewhere safely, from the Cascade
Mountains to the Florida swamps. So whether you are out for a short hike, a
photo shoot of wildlife or a more adventurous outing, this presentation could
help you, and others with you, to prevent serious problems and return home safe
and happy. “No problems” doesn’t happen accidentally! Topics include what you
need to be prepared to go out into the woods, how to read trail markings, and
what to do if you encounter an alligator, a bear or other natives of Florida.
He will even guide you on what to do if you get disoriented or lost.

Your price of admission to this 2 ½ hour seminar is to bring with you a copy of Roger Fulton’s
newest book titled, Safe in the Woods – Tips, Techniques and Advice for Safety and Survival.
($19.95) If you already have a copy, just make a reservation and show up with
the book in hand. If you need a copy you can obtain one locally from the store
at Hontoon Island State Park in Deland, online at www.Commonmanbooks.com or www.RogerFulton.com or make arrangements with Roger to pay for one
by mail or at the door. In any case, please make a reservation so we can plan

It's NOT a survival guide. It's a safety guide so you can plan ahead and won't have to be rescued, or worse. Don't get to that point!
We will be presenting and teaching classes based on the book, but you can get the book now through my webpage at: www.RogerFulton.com or by calling the publisher toll free at: 866-793-0555 and telling them what you want.
Hope to see all of my Florida friends and associates after December 1st.
Until then, best wishes to all,
And I arrived safely in Cortland, NY a few days later. Thanks for your concerns.
Today, my thermometer never got higher than 34 degrees - On April 24th!!!
Where is global warming when you need it?
My best to all of my Florida friends and colleagues. Thanks for a great winter and I'll see you all in December.
Best wishes, as always,
Florida’s great springs are in
trouble. The flow and water quality are
declining. Blue Spring in Orange City, FL is no
exception. A recent report by the FDEP
finds that the nitrate concentration in the spring is almost fifty percent more
than the state allows.

How do I know this? Because I was in the Springshed Academy for several Wednesday sessions this winter in Deltona, Florida. We covered a little bit about groundwater and the geology
below our feet.
We discussed how the great springs of Florida, a natural heritage of the land, are deteriorating at man's hand. The tourist industry, as well as the quality of Florida's water supply, are at stake.

I actually graduated from the Blue Spring Alliance's Springshed Academy and now hold the title of Spring Ambassador. My "job" is to make the public aware of the problems and to speak to social, economic and political groups and individuals to make them aware of the problems and encourage them to "fix" the problems before they get worse. So if you need a speaker for your group next winter, contact me. It's a very nice Powerpoint presentation and we'll tailor it to your group and time frame. www.RogerFulton.com. In Florida more wildlife will see you than you will ever see of them. Their job is to stay hidden from any predators, including you. Here you will see an American Bittern in the middle of the photo, if you can. We caught him at his most exposed position for this photo. you need a trained eye if you want to see such wildlife. When the wind is blowing among the weeds, he will even sway with the weeds to avoid detection. Photo taken in the last few days on one of our outings.
